FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS (FAQs)

televised

Televised Show

1. WHAT IS IT?

Celebration of Music is a brand new talent series that showcases and celebrates the best young musical talent present in America today, hosted by teenage superstar Ethan Bortnick.

2. WHAT IS IT LIKE?

It’s a talent search series that focuses on music and the arts above all else – not the drama that usually comes with other reality/competition-style shows.

PBS is a family-friendly network that promotes talent, creativity, and inclusivity in wholesome and entertaining ways. Celebration of Music therefore continues that tradition, and represents inspirational, music-lead programming for all ages.

3. WHAT WILL HAPPEN IN THE STUDIO?

Each contestant will be invited to perform in front of the cameras, and then get to carry out a short interview with one of our team for use in the show!

4. WHAT QUESTIONS WILL I BE ASKED?

It depends! Each contestant will be asked a series of pre-selected questions that best relate to his or her (or their) individual talent – such as what made you want to start performing, how you first discovered your talent, or why you’re excited to potentially perform in concert.

Contestants are also encouraged to share stories about themselves from their past, and even send along old photos and home videos for visual aids of when they were really small to now! It’s all your time to shine.

A producer will provide all contestants with their own personal Dropbox link for such supplementary materials closer to filming, and we’ll use them in the background during your segment on the show - so the more choice you provide us with (and the more it relates to the questions you answered), the more time you might get on TV!

(We’ll also need each contestant to write with a short biography of themselves for us too and also include it in the folder.)

5. HOW LONG WILL I GET TO PERFORM?

Each contestant will get 90 seconds to perform in the studio, and don’t worry – these performances can’t (and won’t) be stopped half way through like on other talent search shows. Your slot is your time.

That said, please do come as prepared as possible to meet the 90 second time!

6. WHAT CAN I PERFORM?

Anything! It just can’t be dangerous or illegal, or feature explicit or adult material!

Our producers will work with you ahead of time to help you decide on the absolute best showcase for your talent, but the star here is always you – and if there’s a particular piece you would love to perform more than anything else, we’ll try our hardest to make it possible for you*.

And the more diverse and unique the song choices, the better!

(*Please note however that ALL of our producers and team co-ordinators are experts in their respective music and entertainment fields, and that sometimes what piece you think is best might not actually be the best showcase of your talent/range – or won’t be the best way to get you discovered in the long
run. If this is the case, our producers may recommend some alternatives. Please try to keep an open mind with any of these and remain flexible to our suggestions and feedback! Our ultimate goal is to always make you shine above all else, and we’ll only ever suggest what we feel is in the best interest
for you as a performer!)

7. DO I NEED TO HAVE ANY MUSIC RIGHTS FOR ANYTHING I WANT TO PERFORM?

No, don’t worry – our team will handle all of the rights on our end. All we need from you is
your performance!

8. IS IT BEST TO PERFORM A COVER OR AN ORIGINAL SONG?

Our team advises covers wherever possible, as that way you don’t have to worry about potentially losing any rights/broadcast legality to any original material you’ve produced.

However, if you really do want to have an original piece featured on the show (and are comfortable with us potentially re-broadcasting it in future), feel free to talk to your liaising producer– they’ll try to work something out for you!

9. I CAN’T FIND A VERSION OF MY SONG/PIECE SHORT ENOUGH – WHAT SHOULD I DO?

Don’t worry too much about running over! We’re happy to permit performances to run over 90 seconds on the day if they can’t be shortened, but just be aware that these WILL be cut down by our team later in editing – so it’s always safer to trim it down yourself if you can. That way you avoid any potential disappointment of a cut or transition coming when you didn’t want!

10. WHAT IF I HAVE MINORS IN MY ACT?

We have very strict rules about about performers under 18 years of age.

ALL minors must have one (1) parent or legal guardian present at all times. If the parent or legal guardian cannot attend the taping, the minor must be accompanied by a stand-in guardian of their choosing – typically a close family friend, relative, or teacher/coach.

To nominate a stand-in guardian, please fill out the Guardianship section of your Contestant Release supplied in the Welcome Pack, have it notarized, and email or fax it to us before filming. Any minor without a notarized Guardianship form will sadly NOT be allowed to appear.

If you have any further questions about this at all, please contact your liaising producer.

11. CAN MY FAMILY/FRIENDS COME TO THE RECORDING TO SUPPORT ME?

So long as the space can fit them, absolutely! We love having a packed audience of support, so the more the merrier. Bring the whole neighbourhood if you can!

Your producer will be in touch with more information regarding seating numbers (and how many seats can be allocated per act) closer to the recording date. Once you have that, you can start inviting!

12. WHAT ABOUT GROUPS WITH MULTIPLE MINORS?

If you’re travelling in a group with minors, EACH minor must have one (1) parent or legal guardian present.

However, if certain parents or guardians cannot attend, and another parent or guardian is willing to take over guardianship of the minor(s), then there can be a one (1) adult to four (4) minor ratio.

13. CAN WE ADD ADDITIONAL MEMBERS TO OUR PERFORMANCE GROUP?

Possibly! However, you’ll need approval of your liaising producer first and to explain why the change is needed (for instance, in case of sickness, unavailability, etc.).

14. DO I HAVE TO BRING MY INSTRUMENTS WITH ME?
Yes. The only items we’ll supply are mics and mic stands. Everything else you’ll need to bring.

15. IF I HAVE LARGE INSTRUMENTS/EQUIPMENT, WHAT SHOULD I DO WITH IT?
Your producer will be in touch closer to your recording date to arrange how and when you should bring your items. If you’re local, please do not just show up and drop off equipment early. We have limited space backstage at the station and need to make sure we have room first.

More than likely, however, you will be asked to bring it with you on the day of filming.

16. IF I’M SINGING, SHOULD I SEND IN BACKGROUND MUSIC?
Absolutely! Please send in any materials you need ahead of time in order to help us best showcase your chosen performance.

It’s advisable to also bring a back-up on a memory stick or portable drive as well.

17. HOW MANY FAMILY MEMBERS/GUESTS CAN I BRING BACKSTAGE?
We ask that all contestants are only accompanied by one (1) family member backstage, due
to the space restrictions backstage at the television station.

If you want (or need) to have anyone else accompany you for any reason (such as coaches, teachers, siblings, etc.), they’ll need to be pre-approved by your liaising producer first. Please don’t just show up with extra on the day, as they’ll unfortunately have to be turned away.

18. WHAT ELSE SHOULD I BRING TO FILMING?
ALL props, equipment, instruments, stands, and (if needed) costumes – basically anything else you could possibly need for your act.

You should also bring along snacks for the day and a packed lunch, as well as any other food items if you have certain dietary requirements!

It’s recommended you also bring along something to keep busy with during the other contestants’ segments (such as iPads, Kindles, Switches, DSes, magazines, books, etc).

It’d also crucial to bring along any and all  documentation you’ve been asked to fill out, such as the Contestant Release and Guardianship Forms. Without it, contestants won’t be allowed to appear.

19. WILL FOOD BE SUPPLIED AT FILMING?
Sadly no. Small snacks may be provided throughout the day, but this is typically up to the discretion of the individual television stations (and when available usually operates on a firstcome, first-serve basis). Our team recommends you eat beforehand.

20. CAN I TELL PEOPLE I’LL BE APPEARING ON THE SHOW?
Not just yet! Until we’ve officially announced you as a contestant (typically a few weeks before the show airs, once our final line-up is all confirmed), we ask that contestants don’t inform anyone outside of their immediate family/friends about their selection. This includes talking to the press, posting on social media, sharing photos, private emails, documentation, etc.

This restriction also applies even if the media approaches you first. You’re also not allowed to discuss being selected for (or participating in) the show with the general public on the street. By law we have to take breaches of this provision extremely seriously, and if you’re found to be in violation of these rules it could lead to your elimination from the competition.

As soon as you’ve been given the green-light from us, though, you’re welcome to tell any and everyone! And we’ll even help you!

21. WHEN IS THE WINNER ANNOUNCED?
The winner for each city will be announced at a live concert in their local area – and all contestants are invited! The lucky winner will then be announced during the concert itself and receive the opportunity to perform a solo piece live on stage in front of the whole audience.

22. HOW IS THE WINNER DECIDED?
The winner will be decided through audience voting, both online via email and in-person at the concert itself with paper ballots. Duplicates votes from the same emails/individuals will not be counted, however individuals CAN vote both online and at the concert.

The date and time of these concert are all listed on our website – and will also be given to you directly closer to the time. It’s critical for ALL contestants to be available on this date in order to participate the show.

23. WHAT DOES THE WINNER GET?

In addition to performing at the concert, the winner of each show will also receive an invitation to join us again for our Los Angeles Celebration of Music National Show at the end of 2018 – with hotel fees covered entirely by us! This version of the show will be taped with Ethan and televised across the whole country, and be seen by millions of people!

When the time is right, winners will also get introductions to a variety of agents, managers, and recording companies in Los Angeles as well, and receive an exclusive invitation to record a professional single with Ethan himself – which will be available on iTunes, Spotify, etc.

Finally, as they’ll be appearing on another show for us, winners will naturally also get the chance to perform at yet ANOTHER concert to our biggest ever crowd – and maybe even take home our National Winner title for this season!

24. CAN MY FAMILY/FRIENDS COME TO THE CONCERT TO SUPPORT ME?
Absolutely! We love having a packed audience for support, so the more the merrier. Bring the whole neighbourhood if you want!

We will also have physical voting ballots at the concert which will be worth ten (10) regular votes for every one (1) online one – so the more fans, friends and family you have there, the better your chances at winning!

For example, if you have 50 people at the concert, and each one votes for you to win, that would equal an extra 500 votes towards your count! That could make a huge difference in you winning the competition. So to answer the question: yes! All family and friends should come along and support you live!

25. AM I ALLOWED TO VOTE FOR MYSELF?
Of course! Although each voter is only allowed to vote once online per act. Multiple votes from the same email will be discounted.

26. CAN WE VOTE BOTH ONLINE AND AT THE CONCERT?
As answered above, yes! As audience members for the concert (and Ethan’s guests), you’ll all be given an additional opportunity to vote.

27. WHAT ABOUT THE CONTESTANTS WHO DON’T WIN?
Don’t worry, ALL of our contestants will still get to appear on-stage at the end of the concert to help close out the show with a huge group performance of Michael Jackson’s “We Are The World” (or a similar song) – that way everyone still gets to enjoy the fantastic experience of appearing onstage!

28. HOW MANY GUESTS CAN I HAVE BACKSTAGE AT THE CONCERT?

All contestants under 18 may be accompanied by one (1) family member backstage, due to the space restrictions present at the venue. All contestants over this age will unfortunately not be able to invite anyone backstage, due to the same reasons. If you want – or need – to have anyone else accompany you for any reason, they’ll need to be pre-approved by your liaising producer first.

29. WILL WE NEED TO PURCHASE TICKETS FOR IT?

All Celebration of Music contestants are invited as official guests for the concert, and as such won’t need to buy tickets. This also goes for the one (1) parent and/or guardian who will be backstage with them (if under 18).

However, all other family members, friends, or supporters (basically anyone who will be seeing the show from in the audience) will need to purchase tickets ahead of time. These can be found on our website, or directly through PBS. And remember: the more family, friends and fans you have there, the better your chances of winning!

30. WHAT IF I (AS THE PARENT/GUARDIAN) WANT TO JOIN MY WIFE/HUSBAND/FAMILY
IN THE AUDIENCE HALF WAY THROUGH?

Unfortunately, all contestants under the age of 18 will need to be accompanied by their parent or guardian throughout the show for legal reasons.
Contestants will also need to remain backstage at all times during the show, in preparation for the winner’s announcement and finale performance.

31. WHAT ABOUT GROUPS WITH MULTIPLE MINORS?
As with the filming, if you’re travelling in a group with minors, EACH minor must have one (1) parent or legal guardian present. However, if certain parents or guardians cannot attend, and another parent or guardian is willing to take over guardianship of the minor(s), then there can be a one (1) adult to four (4)
minor ratio.

32. WHAT CAN I PERFORM IF I WIN AT THE CONCERT?
Anything! This can be the same song as from your recorded performance or something completely different. It’s entirely up to you!

Again, our team will work with you ahead of time to suggest any alternative songs that we feel
may better suit your style, but we also want this to be your moment to shine – so if there’s one in particular you want to do more than anything, we’ll try to make it happen however possible.

Don’t worry though – you don’t have to think about which song just yet! Our producers will be in touch with you after the show airs (before the concert itself) to find out everyone’s choices for what they would love to perform if they do win.

33. DO I HAVE TO BRING MY INSTRUMENTS WITH ME?
Usually just the smaller ones – such as guitars, violins, ukuleles, etc! However, if the instrument is something rare or more unique (such as the Chinese Drums, etc.), or particularly personal/lucky to you, you can speak to your liaising producer about potentially bringing it along.

34. WILL I NEED TO SUPPLY A TRACK IF I WIN, OR WILL I BE ACCOMPANIED LIVE?
Please supply a backing track for your chosen song! While we would love to have Ethan accompany everyone (and he may where possible!), it’s safer to have a backing track – just in case!

35. IF I DON’T WIN, CAN I RE-ENTER AGAIN FOR A FUTURE SHOW?
Of course! All contestants are more than welcome to re-apply for the show again next year, or for any other shows local to them in the mean time if you don’t want to want.

We have competitions and concerts lined up throughout the US for 2018/2019, and we’d absolutely love to have you join us again! If you want to do this, just let your producer know afterwards and they’ll transfer your file/info all over for the new city’s audition process!

36. WILL I ACTUALLY GET TO MEET ETHAN?
Yes! You’ll be performing at Ethan’s concert and alongside him directly during the finale, so you’ll definitely get to meet Ethan!

 *******************************************************************************************************************************************************

We hope this helps answer your questions! As always, our team is here to advise and support you as best we can within the guidelines of the competition. Please feel free to reach out to your liaising producer with any further questions at any time!
