Golden Strings

If you want to hear rock, jazz or fiddle music just head down the 900 hallway at Billinghurst Middle School at 7:15 a.m. and you will hear Golden Strings rehearsing our hearts out. We are thirty-five 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students playing violin, viola, cello and string bass and we earned our spots in this awesome ensemble by audition. We also play in our regular school orchestra and many of us play in the Reno Philharmonic Youth Orchestras and the Washoe County Junior Honor Orchestra.

We have earned some recognition including performing at the Nevada All-State Host Concert, Victim’s Rights Advocates Award Ceremonies and at the University of Nevada Reno Jazz Festival. In fact, last year was our first year playing at the jazz festival. Besides earning all superior ratings, one of the judges said, “Man, that band can swing!” We consider that a big compliment and four of our students even earned medals for jazz solos.

Our friend, Tyler, used to go to Billinghurst and now he conducts our orchestra for every concert. He’s only 16 and he is already conducting at his high school and for the Reno Pops. Mrs. Neidhold is our teacher and she always makes sure we have great music to learn and perform.

New adventures always thrill us and that’s why we are excited about being part of Celebration of Music.
